No romaine lettuce left in the fridge led my daughter to clip cilantro from our garden for her lunch.
Her favorite sandwich, the ‘super sandwich’ consists of two pieces of toasted whole wheat bread, no mayonnaise (she hates mayo), torn romaine, two slices of extra sharp cheddar cheese, and torn pieces of turkey deli meat. The crowning touch is a light drizzle of ranch dressing.
Now, it’s not a Pete’s Peppered Pick sandwich, but it is a creative built-at-home sandwich. Jamie Oliver would be proud, right?
The good news is the lack of romaine didn’t stop the creation of the super sandwich. My Hot Cookin’ daughter said, “I know! I’ll go get some cilantro from our vegetable garden!”
She proceeded to go in our backyard, clip some cilantro, and then washed and destemmed the cilantro. Pretty sophisticated palate, to eat cilantro on a sandwich instead of romaine!
Just goes to show you the beauty of cooking and gardening. You’re setting a good example for your kids. How are you doing with your home-cooked meals? Any good stories to share?

Hey, that looks pretty good. I am just wondering, though… Is the cilantro too powerful on a sandwich? What was the verdict from your daughter?
Jimmy,
Well, it must have been good, because the sandwich was scarfed up pretty quickly!
Good question–I think it really depends on the person as to how much cilantro to put on the sandwich. I’d say start with just a little, maybe 3-4 small cilantro leaves, and add more if you want to increase the cilantro power…have fun with it!
Wow, like mother-like daughter! Great idea! I’ll bet it was very good, too.
I love Cilantro!!!! I could totally load it up w/Cilantro but as you said it would depends on the individual palate… My hubbie loves cilantro on things but putting it on a sandwich he would NOT do… It is amazing if we leave it at kids what amazing ideas they would come up with. My niece apparently had the idea that you eat peppers like apples just pick them up and bite on it. The mother never said a thing… YUMMY!!!

@Lea,
Apparently it was delicious (I didn’t get even a small bite, sob)–that sandwich was scarfed up in about 5 minutes flat!
@ChefLiz,
I’m with you…I could load my sandwich with cilantro, but don’t think my hubby would go for more than 3 cilantro leaves. To each his own! That’s so funny about your niece eating peppers like apples!
